We love cooking some of our favorite fried foods in the air fryer

From fried pickles to fried chicken, we’ve got quite the repertoire. Recently, we’ve added French fries to the mix and we aren’t looking back!

Are air-fried French fries healthy?

With less than 2 tablespoons of oil used in the entire recipe, air-fried fries are so much healthier than their fried counterpart. They contain a fraction of the calories and fat, and these aren’t the slightest bit processed.

Making your own homemade air fryer fries are great because:

  • They use simple Ingredients. This recipe calls for potatoes and a few spices that you’ll likely already have in your pantry!
  • It’s kid-friendly. If you’ve ever been hesitant to give your kids fries, then these air fryer ones are a much better option.
  • It’s fast. From prep to plate, these fries cook up in less than 15 minutes.

What I love most about this recipe is that you get the crunchy, crispy goodness of restaurant-quality French fries without the excessive calories you get with oil frying. This is the kind of potato dish you can feel good about eating regularly!

Ingredients needed

Besides potatoes and seasonings, there isn’t much else that goes into this recipe. Here is what you’ll need:

  • Large russet potatoes. Wash them and cut them into slices of equal size.
  • Olive oil. For air frying.
  • Salt. To taste.
  • Italian seasoning.

How to air fry French fries

These easy instructions will help you enjoy the healthiest and yummiest french fries:

Step 1: Scrub, clean, and slice the potatoes

After soaking in water to loosen any dirt, scrub it off to clean your potatoes. Once dry, slice them up into fries of even thickness.

Step 2: Drizzle with olive oil and season

Add the fries to a large mixing bowl, give them a drizzle of olive oil, and mix just enough to coat them evenly. Then to season, sprinkle salt and Italian seasoning.

Step 3: Add your fries to the air fryer

Place a single layer of potatoes in the greased air fryer basket and air fry at 200C/400F for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Step 5: Repeat the process until all the fries are cooked

If you intend to make a lot of fries, repeat this process for as many batches as required until you have the desired amount of fries ready.

Flavor variations

The beauty of these fries is just how easy they are to customize. Here are some ideas we’ve tried:

  • Add different spices. Sprinkle your own blend of spices for flavor from rosemary to oregano. Chilli flakes are my favorite.
  • Serve with dips or sauces. While ketchup or aioli are standards, we love to change it up with homemade big mac sauce or sweet potato fry dipping sauce.
  • Use Yukon gold potatoes. These potatoes are considered the second best for french fries because they taste better than russet potatoes.

Storage instructions

To store: Place leftovers in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to three days.

To freeze: Place the cooked and cooled fries in a shallow container and store them in the freezer for up to two months.

Reheating: Preheat your air-fryer and pop them in till they are ready to eat.
