When I first did whole30 several years ago, I definitely did my fair share of snacking. Dried fruits and nuts were my go to, but to completely honest, they were a pain.

I felt like I was a bird, nibbling away in between work assignments, work meetings and on my long commutes home (this was during the time I was working in corporate Australia)

No longer is that the case, thanks to these homemade cherry pie larabars. If you paid close attention to my round-up of Vegan Whole30 Breakfast Recipes, I teased you with some upcoming snacks- Featuring these whole30 compliant snacks bars.

What is a Larabar?

Larabars are essentially a blend of nuts and dried unsweetened fruit, with some optional extras; usually in the form of chocolate chips, fruit juice, spices and sometimes, coconut oil.

Are Larabars Whole30 compliant?

There are quite a few larabars which are whole30 compliant, but also several which clearly aren’t.

Saying that the ones which AREN’T whole30 compliant, you can be your bottom dollar that I’ve given it a whole30 makeover. 🙂

What are the ingredients in the original Cherry Pie Larabars?

The ingredients in the original cherry pie larabars need just 3 ingredients- Dates, almonds and dried cherries.

The homemade Cherry Pie Larabar makeover!

You’ll notice in my recipe the ingredients stay exactly the same-

3 Ingredients

Flourless and grain free

Dairy free and sugar free

Ready in 5 minutes

WHOLE 30 compliant

The main KEY difference is the price! Larabars can go from anywhere between $2 to up to $6 (darn you, JFK Airport!).

For the same price as three store-bought larabars, you can make 12 homemade cherry pie larabars! Can we say WINNING!

Not only will these homemade cherry pie larabars be my savior during my vegan meat-free vegetarian whole30 challenge, they are also suitable for a snack anytime of the year. They are completely paleo, vegan and gluten-free, and naturally sweetened.

They are the ultimate portable snack which needs no refrigeration, but is also freezer friendly!

Medjool dates VS Generic dates

Just a quick note- Medjool dates work best for these homemade Larabar recipes, but they can be very costly.

To combat this, generic dates work well too. They are super cheap and easily accessible. Because they aren’t as soft and fudgy as Medjool dates, you’ll need to soak them in warm water for 30 minutes prior to using them.

Dried Cherries

Be sure your cherries are 100% unsweetened and contain just one ingredient- cherries! They can be a little difficult to find, but online stores and health food shops should stock them.

For a tarter cherry pie Larabar, swap half the cherries with unsweetened cranberries.

Come January 1st, Whole30 will have its challenges (especially for those doing it vegan, vegetarian or meat-free!). I promise you that I’ll be sharing snacks to keep us all in check and satisfied throughout! Kickstart it with these 3-ingredient homemade Cherry Pie Larabars!

Servings: 12 Bars
Prep: 5 mins
Cook: 5 mins
Total: 10 mins

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Line an 8 x 8-inch pan or loaf pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a high-speed blender or food processor, add your raw almond and blend until a coarse texture remains.
  • Add your dried cherries and pitted dates and blend until fully incorporated, scraping down the sides at regular intervals.
  • Once a thick dough remains, transfer from blender/food processor to the lined pan and press firmly in place. Refrigerate until firm before slicing into 16 bars.

Notes

* Make sure the dates are firmly packed (filled to the brim of 3/4 cup). If you use standard dates, use the soaked amount, not the pre-soaked amount.
If the Larabar dough seems a little tough, continue blending and add a tablespoon or two or water if needed.
Homemade Cherry Pie Larabars can be kept at room temperature. It's best to wrap each one individually. They are best kept refrigerated and are freezer friendly.

  1. How easy are these?!! Thank you! (The link to the unsweetened cranberries may be wrong – it goes to sweetened ones.)

  2. What would be a good substitute for the almonds? I’ve been craving these bars but in the years since having one, I discovered that I’m really allergic to almonds. 🙁

  3. 5 stars
These were super easy to whip up and tasted delicious! I would echo the author’s note to soak your dates if you use generic ones. Mine were very tough in the bag and soaking them made a world of difference. Thanks for sharing this great recipe!
